Jesus: the Door to the Promises

Posted by israeliteindeed on October 27, 2014

Now I say that Jesus Christ has become a servant to the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made to the fathers, and that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy, as it is written:

“For this reason I will confess to You among the Gentiles,
And sing to Your name.”

And again he says:

“Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people!”

And again:

“Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles!
Laud Him, all you peoples!”

And again, Isaiah says:

“There shall be a root of Jesse;
And He who shall rise to reign over the Gentiles,
In Him the Gentiles shall hope.” (Rom. 15:8-12)

What promises did Jesus confirm when He became a servant to the circumcision? He confirmed the Old Testament promises. Jesus told the Jews that the Old Testament Scriptures wrote of Him, and that even Moses had written of Him (Jn. 5:39;46).

And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. (Lk. 24:27)

Unfortunately most Jews rejected His claim, and as always occurs when we do not receive a love for the Truth, they embraced lies based on nationalism, genealogy, or ritual; and this has continued to this very day. What is even sadder is that much of the Gentile church in the west is so apostate today, she is lending her support to the works of evildoers and thinking she serves God by doing so. But whether they join hands or no, they will not inherit the promises.

Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. (Gal. 4:30)

It is in Christ that ALL the promises find their fulfillment:

For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us. (2 Cor. 1:20)

Now notice in the Romans 15 passage, what effect the fulfillment of the promises would have on the Gentiles. They would be rejoicing “with His people;” they would hope in Him, and they would submit to His Kingly reign along with the believing Jews. We don’t see a cutting off of all God’s Hebrew people, but instead a grafting in of Gentiles with those Hebrews who are faithful. (Same language we see in Rom. 11) Certainly, Paul does not have every single Gentile in view here, but those who are converted to Christ.

The believing Gentiles are grafted into the Olive Tree, which is God’s chosen people–a tree which was stripped of many (but thankfully not all) Jewish branches due to their unbelief (Rom. 11:17-24). (This is not the first time the Olive Tree was pruned; see also Jer. 11:1-17 for an earlier time. One can also see the death of the first generation of Israelites in the wilderness as a pruning, as well as smaller judgments which swallowed up particular families, etc. We must endure to the end to remain in the Olive Tree.)

The Olive Tree is a picture of God’s kingdom.

How can a kingdom (the Israel of God) be made of people from all over the earth?! Christ’s kingdom is within every believer, and is not something that can be observed in this carnal realm or advanced through carnal means (Lk. 17:20-21). But oh, how the carnal man rankles at this teaching, always seeking to set up something that satisfies the lust of his eyes and flesh, and his pride of life.

Herein is the mystery of God revealed, and how the Israel of God shall be populated with the saved–by faith. God’s Kingdom is the Israel of God, and it is not of this world. Away with these lies that keep repeating that His kingdom is of this world! Away with these foolish statements that we must strengthen the hands of evildoers to be blessed! (“We must bless the modern earthly state of Israel to be blessed”=satanic lie.) To enter the kingdom which Jesus came preaching, and to be blessed, every man is commanded to repent of sin and believe upon Christ. When he does so, he becomes an heir with Jesus of the promises.

There is NO PHYSICAL JEW OR GENTILE in Christ! The flesh profits nothing–absolutely nothing. In Christ and His kingdom, there are only “True Jews” and “Israelites In-Deed” who have entered the kingdom of God by loving and submitting to its King (Rom. 2:28-29; Jn. 1:47). He is the only Door to the Promises.

The New Covenant Attitude Toward Land Possession

Posted by israeliteindeed on September 14, 2014

Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. (Acts 2:44-45)

Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common… Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need. (Acts 2:32, 34, 35)

This is interesting in light of the old Hebrew laws about land. The Hebrews were supposed to maintain the exact borders of their family inheritance. Yet when these believers entered the New Covenant, they were quick to sell their possessions–including land–in order to help the poor. Today’s dispensational and zionist believers should consider this carefully. Why weren’t the Christians proclaiming their rights to own the land? Why didn’t they publicly condemn the Romans for “dividing the land”? Why do we have no record of their ever preaching about a physical restoration of their countrymen to the land? (In fact, the unbelieving zealots did believe in and fight for physical restoration, but they were overcome in 70 AD.) Why weren’t they asking for money in order to buy up more land for God? Perhaps the next verse gives the answer:

And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. (Matt. 19:29)

They believed Jesus! They knew the promised inheritance was eternal life!

They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented— of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us. (Heb. 11:37-40)

These persecuted Christians were willing to be homeless because of their faith. Notice they “did not receive the promise,” but they shall receive it with us on the same day we do. Abraham and other Old Testament saints who actually lived in “the promised land” considered that land “a foreign country.” They only saw the promise “afar off.” What does this tell us? The promise was spiritual, and these people of faith knew it. They were not seeking a natural homeland, but a heavenly country.

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God…These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them. (Heb. 11:8-10; 13-16)

I am not attempting to make the case that land ownership is a sin. However, the fight over “the holy land” is a carnal fight between carnal men. It was carnality in the days of the Jewish-Roman wars, it was carnality in the days of the “Christian” vs. Muslim crusades, and it is carnality today. Today the Muslims and Jews fight over “holy sites,” and even Christians express sorrow for the Christians who can’t access them. However, real Christians are not losing any sleep over being barred from such sites. They know this:

The woman said to Him, “Sir…Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father…the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (Jn. 4:19-24)

Yes, true worshipers are walking in this reality daily:

But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven. (Heb. 12:22-23a)

Remember that those who have entered Christ are heirs of the promises to Abraham by faith (Gal. 3:16;29). There is neither Jew nor Greek in this spiritual family; Christ is all and in all (Col. 3:11). But in Christ we have not inherited earthly possessions. As children of Abraham in the eyes of God, none of us has the right or calling to go take possession of a piece of the Middle East by force, whether for ourselves or for others. Remember that the earliest Jewish Christians in the book of Acts were doing just the opposite! Like Abraham, true saints have their hearts set on pilgrimage rather than possession of land. Wherever they happen to dwell in the flesh, they seek a homeland…a heavenly country.

Entering into Christ, every Christian enters the “better covenant” with “better promises,” which was foreshadowed and planted in the Old Covenant. The spiritual realities now far eclipse the old shadows. Clinging to the old shadows–when their fulfillment has come in the Lord Jesus–is unbelief.

The Pride of Life & Confidence in the Flesh

Posted by israeliteindeed on August 4, 2014

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. (I Jn. 2:15-17)

I was considering this morning the following question:

Just what does “the world” have to seek after, if it is not seeking after Christ? The answer is always the lust of the flesh (pleasure), the lust of the eyes (covetousness for material gain), and the pride of life. The “pride of life” is the hardest for me to define. But I think the apostle Paul explained what the pride of life was for him:

For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh, though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so: circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. (Phil. 3:3-11)

The confidence Paul had in his life in the flesh prior to his conversion = the pride of life.

These were the things Paul once considered “gain” when his confidence was in his flesh–

1. Being circumcised (following religious code)
2. Being “of the stock of Israel” (Nationalism)
3. Being of the tribe of Benjamin (Pride in family)
4. Being considered a “Hebrew of Hebrews” (cream of the crop in his nation)
5. Being a Pharisee (religious leader)
6. Being zealous for his apostate religion against the church
7. Being “blameless” in his lawkeeping

But how did Paul view these things now that he was a follower of Jesus?–He viewed them all as “rubbish” compared to knowing and gaining Christ, and being found in Him. These things no longer had any value to him!

And look what Paul says just a few verses later:

Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern. For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things. For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. (17-20)

Paul wanted the Philippians to walk just as he was walking, focused on gaining Christ, not glorying in the things of this world. He redefined “the circumcision” as those who worship God in the Spirit. Thus the Christian Philippians–though not circumcised in their flesh–were part of “the circumcision.” Paul wept over those who had their minds set on earthly things, and reminded the Philippians that our citizenship is in heaven! Those whose minds are set on earthly things are “enemies of the cross of Christ.” That wonderful, violent cross has forever broken down the wall of partition between men, and rendered as rubbish all the things in which they once gloried–things which are actually “their shame.”

It is heartbreaking to me to see so many professing Christians today glorying in earthly things. Is it not the pride of life to be “proud to be an American”? Or proud that our relatives have served in some war? Should we be proud that our relatives have helped destroy lives, or should we consider this our–and their–shame? I know this cuts into all that we have been taught since we were born. But the empty traditions handed us by our fathers were and are all leading to destruction anyway. It is high time to denounce them as the rubbish of the world and choose Christ. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God. (Lk. 16:15)

To become a Christian is to undergo a radical transformation in the way we think. When all things become new, our very understanding of life is fundamentally changed. The Sermon on the Mount redefines “blessing” for the follower of Jesus, and gives him a whole new way to behave. What the world views as logical and praiseworthy, the saint now abhors. And what the saint now sees as correct, by following the teaching and example of Christ, the world rejects (Jn. 15:18-20).

Where the world exalts pride, Jesus said the poor in spirit are blessed. Where the world promotes a search for constant laughter and “happiness,” Jesus says those who mourn are blessed. Where the world approves power over others by brute force, Jesus says it is the meek who will inherit all things. Where the world says “only the strong survive,” Jesus says the merciful will receive that mercy which will eternally sustain them. Where the world insists that greater aggression is the answer to man’s constant strivings against one another, Jesus said the peacemakers are “the sons of God.” Where the world teaches that we should avoid suffering at any cost, Jesus said persecution for His sake is a sure sign of God’s blessing.

Dear reader, let us be careful that we aren’t latched onto things that are “passing away,” or seeking blessings as defined by the world rather than God. This is very serious, for to love the world is to prove that the love of the Father is not in us. Let us not glory in our shame. If we are honest, there are many things in our nation’s–or family’s–history that should make us blush (wherever we are from.)

All the nations and families of the earth have fallen. When Paul penned the words, “All have sinned…”, he was in large part explaining to the Gentiles that his own Jewish nation had fallen short just as the Gentiles had. There is no national or familial “high ground” from which one group can glory over another group–unless we wish to lose Christ and pass away with this world. And any doctrine that provides such a “moral high ground” for any group of people on the earth, is a doctrine of devils sent to create enemies of the cross of Christ. Any doctrine that promotes the pride of life and confidence in the flesh, also promotes a departure from the Lord and a choosing of the curse. Be not deceived.

Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord.” (Jer. 17:5)

Dear Palestine

Posted by israeliteindeed on July 21, 2014

Dear Palestine,

You are on my heart today.

I want to help you. I want to somehow make the American church care about you. Some do care. But many do not because they are deceived. They care about their economy, their elections, the society their children will grow up in, and their wealth.

They have fallen so far from Jesus, they do not have His mind or His heart anymore. Pleasures and material things have turned them away from Jesus even though they keep using His Name. They gather in their churches to worship Him, but the American flag stands in the corner of the room, and America’s ideals are more important to them than God’s Word. Before they pledge obedience to the Word of God, they first pledge obedience to their nation, even though their nation does not obey God. They are doubleminded and unstable in all their ways because they are trying to serve two masters. They care more about their American Constitution and the liberties they think they deserve, than they do about God’s Word, justice and mercy.

Their pastors have studied in schools that taught them America and Israel have a right to rule others with force. They teach the lie that these nations are better than other nations. People love their teaching because it makes them feel special, and it helps them forget how much they are disobeying God every day. They have loved violence, and pursued the kind of freedom that comes by oppressing others for so long, it goes against their nature to question what they are doing. They don’t want to change, and they forget that God is going to judge them. Above all, they wish to justify themselves, and to accept no guilt. And so they have rejected much truth and swallowed many lies.

Many who say they are Christians have cast Jesus’ teachings behind their backs. They do not really believe that the meek inherit the earth. Instead they believe that the well-armed and willing-to-kill inherit the earth. They have replaced poverty of spirit with American or Israeli pride, and they are not ashamed to boast that they are proud. Instead of being peacemakers in times of men’s evil wars, they are promoters of war and willing supporters of greed and destruction. They are so filled with the raging spirit of the age, they cannot hear God’s quiet conviction. But to justify themselves, they claim to be following Jesus in all of their violence and covetousness and partiality. They lie about Jesus, they twist His teaching, and they slander the real followers of Jesus, calling them evil-doers.

When shown Jesus’ command to love their enemies, they refuse to obey. They have relegated such words to only those times when little is at stake. When their prosperous way of life seems at stake, they are ready to fight and to kill to protect their material things, and their own families. But the children of others mean little to them. The poverty of others doesn’t move them. They think the suffering of others is well-deserved, but they themselves deserve only peace and prosperity. They refuse to be “good Samaritans” like Jesus taught (Luke 10:25-37). They stand on various hills of morality and accuse one another, and they enter political debates, but the way of Christ they refuse to know and walk in.

They have loved abundance and pleasure, and forsaken their God. Woe to them. Their lips speak of God, but their hearts are far from Him. They love idols, and have baptized their idols and called them blessed, but they are not blessed. They have become as blind and useless as their idols. They themselves are under a curse unless they repent.

But you, Palestine…please know that the God who made the world sent Jesus, to die for the sins of the world. It is through Him that we can be forgiven of our merciless actions, our rebellious wanderings, and the many hurts we have brought into this world. When we suffer at the hands of others, it is good for us to remember that we also have caused suffering at times to some people. All people groups on the earth have disobeyed God. Jesus is God’s Word in human flesh, come to be the sacrifice for our sins. All people from every nation who turn away from their sins and follow Him will be saved. They will be given a new heart that loves God and people. God will make them citizens of His kingdom, which is a kingdom not of this world. They won’t fight over land any more, or covet their neighbor’s possessions.

This life, which is very hard, will end for all of us one day. Jesus’ followers will continue to live in that eternal kingdom, not of this world, in which there is no more murder, injustice, or cruelty. It is a kingdom in which people from every nation love one another and are one family (even in this life). Those who follow Jesus will have their sins forgiven and will have eternal life, together with Him. God’s Word is alive! Jesus is Alive! And you can follow Him and possess life that men cannot take away with their bombs and their guns. Men can only kill the body, but they can’t kill the soul. And just as God raised Jesus from the dead, so He will resurrect from the dead all who love Jesus. I cannot stop the bombs from falling on you, but I can share this hope with you–that we can be family and live at peace forever because of Jesus.

Jesus did not teach what many Christians and Jews and Muslims teach–merciless killing in God’s name, and a lust for material things and lands and pleasures. In fact, Jesus said that people who are NOT following Him will kill others in God’s name, thinking they are serving Him. They are not serving Him, but themselves. They might say they serve God, but they are refusing to know God. We can only know God through Jesus. Jesus said we must be born again to see the true Kingdom of God. We must hate our old way of life, and ask for God’s forgiveness, knowing that Jesus died to make our forgiveness possible. Then God will give us a new heart and make us a new person. We will have power to forgive the people who hurt us, just like Jesus forgave those who hated Him. And we will have power to live as Jesus lived and taught.

Jesus lived and taught the way of humility, mercy, peace, and patiently enduring injustice without retaliation, because we trust that God will reward His children in heaven (Matthew 5:1-12). There are some Americans and Israelis who follow Jesus’ teachings, and these followers of Jesus do not desire your homeland or your suffering. They speak out against injustice, and they rebuke the oppressor (Isaiah 1:17). They mourn with you and try to help others understand that they should not approve of wickedness. They know that God has a people in all nations who fear Him, and love Him. They love you and pray for your salvation in Jesus, which will give you lasting peace.

Love on behalf of true followers of Jesus,

melissa
